Welcome to our year 5 class page. Year 5 consists of: Swifts, taught by Mrs Barber, and Kingfishers, taught by Ms Whitmore. The other adults you may see working in Year 5 are: Mrs Davy, Miss Ranson, Ms Curran and Mrs Constable.
All of our learning will be underpinned by our school curriculum drivers: ‘Planet Earth, Mastery and Every Opportunity’. Our school value ‘belief’ is also essential in supporting children to succeed and be prepared for the following year (Year 6 KS2 SATs).
Now that you are in Year 5, we will expect you to be our role models, prefects and leaders at Cliff Lane. With this comes responsibility...“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader” John Quincy Adams. We have high expectations… The classroom must remain tidy at all times. We expect reading to be completed (and recorded) at home everyday. You will be responsible for your belongings (including your homework and your reading record). We also expect focus, determination and hard work throughout all lessons. You must try your best and be kind to everyone!
In English, we will be analysing a range of high quality texts in order to produce writing that is full of rich vocabulary and literary devices. Throughout the year, we will be reading the following texts:
Cosmic Disco
Kensuke’s Kingdom
Cosmic - It’s one giant leap for all boy-kind
I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Firework-Maker’s Daughter
The Dig
Tales of Wisdom and Wonder
The Adventures of Odysseus
In Maths, we will be perfecting our arithmetic skills during morning Fast Maths sessions and Arithmetic Friday lessons. We will also be reinforcing our times table knowledge from Year 4 - working to improve our fluency, speed and recall. TTRockStars and Hit the Button will be the online platforms that we will use regularly. We will also be using our Maths No Problem Workbooks throughout the year to cover a range of maths topics. We will begin with numbers to 1 000 000 and conclude with area and perimeter.
In topic, we will be learning about The Alps and the Vikings. Following this, we will explore what life was like in Tudor Britain. The children will also analyse deserts, oceans and learn about the Greeks.
We look forward to seeing the incredible learning that is going to take place across the academic year. Do it right, Do it well, Do it!
