Hello! Welcome to Year 3. Year 3 consists of two classes; the Hawthorns and the Rowans. Mrs Dunham will be teaching the Hawthorns, and she really enjoys PE and Maths. Miss Byrne will be teaching the Rowans, and she loves English and Art.

In the Summer Term, our geography topic will be Antarctica and who lives there. During this topic, we will also be going on an exciting trip to Colchester Zoo, to learn more about the amazing animals that live in Antarctica.

This topic will also link nicely with our non-fiction books in English, in which the children will be writing both fiction and non-fiction pieces. We will be using the book ‘Antarctica: A Continent of Wonder’ as well as ‘Little People, Big Dreams: Ernest Shackleton’ to write a fact-file, a diary entry and a biography. We will finish the term focusing on Ancient Egypt, where the children will use Usborne Publishing books about Cleopatra and Tutankhamun to write a non-fiction biography.

In maths, we will continue on from our Spring 2 learning on money, before moving on to learning about length, mass and volume. Also this term we will focus on angles, lines and shape and perimeter of shapes to help the children prepare for the maths in year 4.

We will be learning lots of new and exciting information in many other subjects. In Spanish, we are focusing on vegetables and learning all the vocabulary associated with these. In science, we will introduce roots and shoots to the children and we will think about all of the things plants need to flourish. In DT, we will learn about different sewing techniques to create our own cushion, that we could use in Antarctica!

This Summer term will be full of fun and fabulous learning opportunities, and we will continue to ‘do it right, do it well, do it’!
