During the summer holidays, a few areas of the school were updated. You may have noticed that the front of the school was treated to some new signs and a beautiful blue welcome mat. While inside the school the green room received a lick of paint to now include a vibrant wall to match it's name. You may have heard that The Rainbow was being revamped over the summer and is now The Ocean Room. Photos of all of these can be seen in the slideshow below.

They completed lots of activities including; spider web weaving, a bug hunt, butterfly printing, pinecone spiders, lolly stick flowers and making their own fruit bug for snack and planting some wonderful plants to encourage the bugs to visit their minibeast mansion which they made! We’re sure there’ll be lots of visitors to the mansion.

We Got Green!

02.07.2021

Unbeknown to the children, the adults at Cliff Lane had a secret 'Green Day' today to celebrate an amazing achievement! Miss Mowles and the Young Planetarians have been working extremely hard driving our school to GO FOR GREEN.

The Eco-Schools Green flag is the top award for schools who have completed a range of work in environmental areas, and this includes making sure that it appears throughout our core curriculum, as well as additional projects and clubs.

The exciting news that we can share with you is that WE DID IT! The lockdowns have not stopped us and we have valiantly taken every opportunity to continue to achieve and make a difference. We should all feel proud for our collective efforts, particularly the Young Planetarians for the legacy they will leave.

James Campbell visits Cliff Lane

25.06.2021

On Friday, the very funny, talented and highly engaging author James Campbell came to Cliff Lane to talk to years 1 to 6 about writing stories. Due to covid protocols, the main talk was completed over Google Meet, although James did manage to visit the classes individually and introduce himself from a safe distance. After some technical difficulties, James Campbell wowed the children with two highly comical and animated stories, “The Toothless Tiger” and “The Umbrella Tree”. The children enjoyed joining in with the main parts of the story. Later, he explained what writers NEED to write a story and also what they DON’T; apparently you don’t need a drill or a helicopter. He also read some parts from his book, “Funny Life of Pets”, that includes some hilarious animal stories; who knew that cats were afraid of cucumbers? James dazzled the children with comical anecdotes and snippets of his many stories. He talked about the importance of a pen and a basic pen at that. Funny pet stories were shared across the key stage with stories of dogs stealing shoes and eating lego being listed. Thank you for such an inspiring and uplifting visit.

Year 4 Visit to Colchester Castle

24.06.2021

Year 4 had a great visit to Colchester Castle on Thursday. They got to go under the castle and discovered this was the remains of a Roman Temple. The children listened to stories of how the Romans arrived in Britain and how the Celts reacted to the Roman invasion. Upstairs in the castle they worked in teams to create an iron age roundhouse and a Roman villa.

“We thought it was really interesting and we learnt lots of facts and also got to visit the underground part of Claudius temple. It was a really fun experience and we got to learn more than we knew already.”- Willows Class.

“Yesterday was really amazing and I loved going into the basement of a Roman temple.”- Poplars Class.

It was a great visit and the children really enjoyed learning about the Romans in a real setting. We were very proud of how the children represented the school and the museum staff were very complimentary about our Cliff Lane children.

KS2 Phase Assembly - Buddhism

18.06.2021

Do you know what a lotus flower represents?

This week, the children in KS2 were learning the meaning behind this religious symbol. Even though a lotus flower grows in muddy waters, it still manages to bloom and rise to achieve enlightenment. The children made origami flowers out of white paper (similar to the white lotus flower) to represent purity of the mind and the spirit. This wasn’t an easy challenge - Well done everyone.

The Wild Wooders Dance Workshop

15.06.2021

On Tuesday, as part of their Arts Award, Year 6 attended a dance workshop led by Miss Sleightholme. The children began by watching the scene 'The Wild Wooders' from the musical theatre production 'The Wind in the Willows'.

During the session, we discussed the background of the story, identified the movements, space, dynamics and relationships within the scene and learnt the lyrics to the chorus of the song. In addition to this, the children were taught a piece of choreography and then created their own movements inspired by this stimulus. It was a fun and creative workshop: great effort everyone!

Clean Air Day

15.06.2021

Andrew and the Young Planetarians made children and their parents aware that it is clean air day on Thursday 18th June. They spoke about the effects of traffic pollution and how it can be reduced (walking/cycling ect). They used a piece of equipment that identified noise pollution, which enabled us to see if cars were waiting with their engines on - therefore contributing to air pollution. Did you see their video on Twitter?

Did you see the monkeys?

14.06.2021

On Monday the 14th June, Hedgehogs and Squirrels dressed up as characters from the book Monkey Puzzle, for their world book day. In the morning the children wrote about the characters they had come dressed up as, using all of the skills they have been learning in English such as great adjectives and conjunctions. After play they all had great fun choosing an activity to complete: there was puppet making, small world and mindfulness jungle colouring. In the afternoon the used watercolours and painted illustrations from the book. What a fantastic day everyone had.

Monarch Monday

07.06.2021

On Monday 7th June, Otters and Badgers had a dress up day, as an extension of World Book Day last term, leading into their topic ‘Monarchs’. In the morning, the children baked scones using the Queen’s favourite recipe. After break, they practised drawing a royal portrait; this was either a Royal or a picture of ourselves dressed up as a Royal. After lunch, the children prepared the bunting before enjoying their own street party - they even ate the scones they'd made in the morning!

When children become teachers...

18.05.2021

On Tuesday, four children from Badgers and Otters met with the Barn Owl class from Ilketshall Primary to talk about their religion: Hinduism. Our Cliff Lane children spoke to their parents to learn even more about their religion before becoming the teachers and answering questions. When reflecting on their experience, the children said that they loved being able to share their religion with others and said it was really exciting being the teacher. They recalled one of the questions was 'what do you like about being a Hindu?' The children said, 'We can pray to different gods. There are loads of gods and goddesses to pray to. We get to eat different foods.' We are incredibly proud of our children for sharing their knowledge.

Friend or Foe?

17.05.2021

Hawthorns and Badgers began the week by dressing up as evacuees from WW2 based on the book Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo. The best way to share the children's day is by reading their reflections:

I enjoyed the air raid practice. The siren and explosions were really scary!

I liked dressing up as an evacuee. I felt like I had gone back in time.

We sent each other secret messages using a cipher code. Only I could read my friend's message.

I liked dancing to wartime music, I danced with Mrs Parker.

WW2 Experience Day

14.05.2021

Poplars and Willows had a fun filled day learning all about World War 2. The children arrived at school with gas masks, old coins, badges, rationing cards and name tags. The children experienced an air raid, wrote postcards home, rationed out some sweets and played various games. Here's what some of the children had to say about their day:

Today was really fun, especially playing World War 2 games, including skipping and the half penny shove.

Skipping with the 5 metre rope with my friends was great.

Dressing up like an evacuee was fun and it felt quite scary doing the air raid drill!

Writing a postcard home was fun and relaxing.

Reception World Book Day

06.05.2021

This week it was Reception's turn to have their World Book Day where the children had a fun filled day linked to Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. The children dressed up as various characters from the book, including witches, dragons and frogs. The children put pencil to paper in phonics to write sentences; made edible wands and hats; and used playdough to create some of the characters. The children (and adults) had a magical day!

London's Burning

06.05.2021

On Thursday 6th May, Badgers and Otters had a fiery experience lesson where they set London on fire! The children built Tudor and Stuart houses from 1666 which they put together to create a town and then set fire to it. They discussed combustion, fuel and how the fire spread so quickly.

Daily Mile Day

30.04.2021

On Friday 30th April, we took part in #EnglandDoesTheDailyMile

Every class took their turn to complete 8 laps of our school playground to achieve their daily mile. The children (and adults) were able to run, skip, walk or jog their mile whilst being out in the fresh air and getting some much needed vitamin D.

We even had some animals completing the daily mile today!

UKS2 Book Days

Year 6 - Famous Scientists

On Wednesday, Kestrels and Cormorants came to school dressed in all things science. It was amazing to see their effort and creativity. The classrooms were a collage of science ranging from galileo to carbon, with a solitary planet thrown in for good measure. The children (and adults) had a fantastic afternoon working scientifically while investigating density of liquids and the process of diffusion in skittles. It is very clear to us that they are the next generation of scientists are in training.

Year 5 - Jungle Book

On Friday, Swifts and Kingfishers had a fun World Book Day based on the theme ‘The Jungle book’. The children dressed up as characters from the book, made animal masks and competed in animal races to see who was the fastest. It is safe to say that the children had a jungletastic day.

Year 4 - Virtual author visit

On Wednesday, Year 4 had an exciting meeting with the author Jane Clarke to discuss her series of books called Al’s Awesome Adventures. Each book is full of scientific experiments, which was perfect timed for our science week. The children enjoyed asking Jane how she started writing and where she got her experiment ideas from.

Year 5 - Geography walk

In the sunshine on Wednesday afternoon, Year 5 went for a walk down to the quay to look for signs of human and physical geography within our local area. The children used their skills of observation to notice features and share them with each other along the way.

Easter Bake Off Challenge

16.04.2021

At the start of the Easter Holidays, to continue with the extra opportunities available to students through Google classroom, Miss Hancock challenged the children to some seasonal baking treats. There were 3 challenges in total which were optional for the children to recreate themselves, and these were Easter Cookies, Hot Cross Buns and an Easter Cake. All the children who completed any or all of the challenges have been awarded with a certificate. So much imagination and dedication to perfecting their skills in the kitchen have been displayed during these challenges, and we are extremely proud of all the children taking #EveryOpportunity.

26.03.2021

Mrs Poole ran a Secret Garden competition to end the spring term. We received lots of amazing entries from children across the school; from our Nursery Bees to our Year 6 Kestrels and Cormorants. Mrs Poole had such a difficult decision choosing an overall winner, so we awarded prizes to a small group. Here are a few of our proud winners along with their winning designs and prizes. Well done everyone!

Fairtrade Flapjacks

12.03.21

In our final (of 7) challenges for the Spring Term, the children had the chance to learn about Fairtrade products, and support with a creative bake by using one or several of these ingredients. Miss Hancock baked banana and chocolate flapjacks, however, this was another flexible challenge whereby we had coffee and chocolate cake, brownies and cheesecakes among many other delicious Fairtrade treats.

A massive thank you goes out to all those adults who purchased the ingredients and took the time to assist the children in these extra opportunity challenges. We hope you all enjoyed taking part and feel suitably rewarded for your hard work and dedication to the baking.

Star Bakers for this challenge were once again, exceedingly difficult to judge. After reviewing all the entries, Mr Gough and Miss Hancock would like to announce the following star bakers of The Great Cliff Lane Bake Off Challenge.

Katy-Mai - Hawthorns Huxley - Badgers Emily - Badgers

Brilliant Bread Bakers

05.03.2021

In our penultimate challenge for the Spring Term, we offered a slightly different option of baking Miss Hancock's cinnamon star bread or an alternative bread of your choice, providing it contained yeast.

So many of you decided to get busy in the kitchen, making us all very impressed by your skills, and lots of you gave the cinnamon star bread a go. The results as you can see were incredible. Others decided to make bread of other varieties including a bread basket to contain the fresh bread that was also baked, a few fantastic loaves and some superb braids.

Miss Hancock and Mr Gough have been working through the entries for this week, which has been really tough, and can proudly announce the following have won star baker for week 6 of The Great Cliff Lane Bake Off challenge.

Terrific Truffles

26.02.2021

The Great Cliff Lane Bake Off was in the Ipswich Star newspaper over the half term which was rather exciting, showing how many opportunities are available to you during home learning and lockdown.

Normal school will resume very soon but in the meantime, we are still very much enjoying your busy baking sessions in the kitchen, with the assistance of your adults. The truffles were absolutely incredible, so many fantastic variations to the toppings and chocolate coatings, which have made all our mouths water. There were so many of you getting your aprons on and rolling up your sleeves over half term showing your determination in completing this challenge too.

The announcement of the Star Bakers this week as below was yet again a really difficult decision by both Mr Gough and Miss Hancock, the presentation has been extremely professional and attention to detail was superb. You are all amazing bakers and should all be very proud of yourselves. Well done to each and every one of you.

Poetry

Poetry Event

24.02.2021

On Monday 22nd February, we had a very exciting whole school live event to start the new term. We were joined by poet Joshua Seigal who engaged children and families from Nursery to Year 6. We loved hearing his poems and the children even joined in with a few. During the session, Joshua set the school a poetry challenge. Despite this visit being delivered remotely, some children were able to read out their fantastic examples of poems to everyone in the meeting! The session was wrapped up with a Q+A session were we found out more about Joshua's inspirations and advice to all our young poets.

<--- Here are some examples of the poetry produced following the session

A-Z Challenge

22.02.2021

During the first half of the Spring term, we were treated to daily videos from Ms Leek who brought us an inspiring A-Z Challenge. Each day we were taught about a new word which linked to subjects across our whole curriculum! Lots of our children took part and even shared their new learning with us on twitter @CliffLanePri

For those who took part everyday and completed an alphabet notebook, we will be issuing prizes as well as taking copies of the best examples to create our own school archive. However we know for some children, due to the busyness of day to day school work, there are a few gaps in their notebooks. Therefore, we have shared all 25 videos (not 26 as S was for Stop and we had a screen-free day) so gaps can be filled, or videos can be re-watched to revise new words or extend knowledge further.

Focaccia Fun

12.02.2021

The Great Cliff Lane Bake Off is still going strong, having just completed challenge 4! Challenge 5, a special treat just in time to enjoy during half term, was uploaded on Google Classroom yesterday so I hope you all have a go at that one as there is no actual oven involved.

Your Focaccia breads were phenomenal, and those of you who had a little time to give this bake a go, have really impressed us with your own results, with lots of you planning to make it again. The colours of the toppings, designs and flavours that you have chosen to use are incredible - making our job of deciding star bakers harder and harder. Well done on broadening your horizons and taking the opportunity to create such fantastic bread in this challenge.

After much deliberation (long and careful consideration), we have selected the following bakers to be our stars this week, so you have won both a certificate and a prize which will be available to collect from the office after half term - from Monday 22nd February. A massive well done to you all.

Reuben - Squirrels

Ezmae - Hedgehogs

Daphne - Otters

Paige - Badgers

We are all really enjoying seeing your fantastic uploads from your baking each week, and some of you have been amazing at substitutions when you haven't had the exact ingredients, and your flavours have been incredible and inspirational too. It is brilliant to see so many of you choosing to try all the opportunities available to you and expanding your experiences.

Mr Gough and Miss Hancock have made the difficult decision again this week, determining the Mini Muffin Star Bakers. They were able to establish those who really stood out, and we are proud to announce that the following pupils have won a certificate and a little prize for their baking in this challenge:

Thank you so much to everyone who has been getting involved with this extra activity and having so much fun in the kitchen. #LoveLearning

15.01.2021

This week our wonderful children have taken #EveryOpportunity to further their knowledge. Not only have they taken part in the lessons set by their class teachers; children have also participated in a Cliff Lane Bake Off, made pine cone bonsais in our weekly nature activity and began an A-Z notebook along with Ms Leek and her daily alphabet challenge. We have all be blown away by the children's curiosity about the world around them and their dedication to learning and doing their very best, whether that's at home or at school. Well done everyone and continue sharing on Tapestry, Google Classroom and Twitter @CliffLanePri

Home Learning 2021

08.01.2021

On Monday 5th January, our first day back after the winter break, we were informed that schools were going to need to offer a blended approach with key worker children being at schools and others learning from home. Despite it only being a few days, we have been amazed by how quickly children, parents and staff have adapted to working remotely. Here are a few examples from our Cliff Lane children who have shown that, despite the changes in circumstances, they will 'do it right, do it well and do it!' as they just #LoveLearning.

Winter Poems

07.12.2020

Our curriculum challenge last week was to write and present a winter poem. Mr Gough was extremely impressed by those he saw and a few have been uploaded here for you to read and enjoy. Well done to everyone who completed the challenge.

Primary Mathematicians

26.11.2020

A group of children from Years 5 and 6 were invited to take part in the Primary Maths Challenge. They participated in additional maths sessions during lunch times and completed the challenge paper last week.

We are exceptionally proud of those who took the challenge! All of our participants achieved at least bronze award; two Year 5 children achieved silver and one Year 6 reached gold!

Well done to all of our mathematicians- we are incredibly proud of you for taking #EveryOpportunity!

Armistice Day

11.11.2020

‘In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,’

On Wednesday 11th November Cliff Lane held a two minute silence to remember the fallen. Each class also made a wreath full of red, purple, white and black poppies to remember all those involved. Whilst this year may be very different, the way we honour their bravery will never change.

Silver Award

05.11.2020

Our Young Planetarians have been working exceptionally hard along with the rest of the school to earn the Silver Eco-Schools Award! After achieving Bronze, the team have continued their quest to look after our planet. During this term they have shared their knowledge with parents and students about keeping our air clean and considered the amount of waste we produce. With the help of Mr Broom and Miss Mowles, the children analysed the waste we were producing and have been considering ways in which we can reduce this as well as promoting recycling.

Space Creations

22.10.20

Year 5 were set a challenge to create a 3D model of our Solar System. There were no rules on how to make it; the children were just asked to use their creativity and their imagination. Little did we know that the children would come in with some fantastic pieces of work! We are very proud of all their designs.

Clean Air Day 2020

08.10.2020

On Thursday 8th September, our Year 6 school learning council were joined by representatives from Ipswich Borough Council to spread the word about clean air day. The children spoke confidently to parents during drop off about the pollution cars produce and promoted walking to school. They gave out leaflets and flyers, as well as sharing homemade posters.

Real life super hero

29.09.2020

On Tuesday Minnows and Tadpoles were visited by a real life hero...a firefighter! They learnt what to do in an emergency- what to say and who to call- and about all of the equipment a firefighter needs to do their job. They also discovered that firefighters help us in many more ways than we might know about. They learnt that on Sunday Sally was working with other real life heroes to help rescue people who had got stuck in the mud! Sally showed them just how quickly she has to get into her uniform when there is an emergency. Towards the end of the visit they got to see her rapid response vehicle. As she drove it around the playground, they counted the blue flashing lights and listened to the different sirens it can make.

We're learners too!

18.9.2020

As well as being teachers, learning support assistants and administrators, the staff at Cliff Lane are also learners!

Congratulations to Ms King who received confirmation of her National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership, to Mrs Dreher who has successfully passed a qualification in administration, and to some of our LSAs who studied during lockdown for Level 2 specialisms in areas such as ADHD and autism. We're also very pleased to share that Mrs McErlain-Naylor is now a Certified Google Educator.

We currently have a number of teachers who are now studying for their National Professional Qualification in Middle/Senior Leadership, Mrs Booth is currently completing the National Award for Sencos and Mrs Griffiths is working towards a professional qualification in HR.

Woodland Trust Gold Award!

17.04.2020

We all worked together amazingly well and achieved the gold award while working at home or at The Robins. You can see some of the work by clicking here and we were even in the paper! Well done everyone - we did it right, we did it well and we did it!!

World Book Day

05.03.2020

The national World Book Day theme for this year was 'Share a Story'. We decided that instead of the whole school dressing up, that each year group would share a book together over the summer term and each have their own 'Book Day' together. The teachers thought they would start this idea off. They chose The Hungry Caterpillar and dressed up as butterflies, leaves, watermelons, strawberries and even the caterpillar itself! Even our brilliant lunch staff got involved with a special Hungry Caterpillar menu and a fruit bar for everyone to taste some of the fruit from the story.

All the children made a special lanyard (Book Bling) to wear over the day to keep the conversation going about their favourite books, there was an assembly where The Hungry Caterpillar was read in three different languages, teachers swapped classrooms for a very special guest story time, and Year 6 went to the Early Years classrooms to read to our youngest pupils.

Thank you everyone for making this day so special.

Young Planetarians

14.2.2020

We have recently formed a new group at school and we have decided on the name 'Young Planetarians'. We want to make the school more eco-friendly. We are going to make sure we are doing as much as we can to look after the environment. We have completed a review which also looks at our curriculum. We are now putting together our action plan. We think that we will be concentrating on supporting marine life, harvesting water, looking after plants (for bees and other wildlife), and growing food.
